Oh. Pastel on velum… magic. This is the work of Toronto based artist Cathy Daley. I wrote about her work in 2012, but stumbled across this new work in the same series just the other day. Yep, still madly in love.

So many things to love in one post … Papirmass {aka Toronto’s Jp King & Kirsten McCrea}, Boston based painter Scott Listfield, one of Scott’s astronauts, AND a giveaway! Yep, when Jp & Kirsten reached out and asked me to curate this month, I jumped at the chance and immediately knew I’d ask Scott. ps. He said yes. Ok, there are a few stories for me to tell:

Well, you asked and I listened… and then I called Polish-born, US based artist/illustrator Marta Spendowska! I’ve written about Marta several times over the years, the last time being only a few weeks ago. I received so many comments asking me to have her on the podcast, and luckily she said YES! Ok, I am completely in love with Marta’s floral work from a couple of years ago, so I’m going to start there:
Right!? Sigh. Near the beginning of our conversation she mentioned doing portraits… I had no idea she did portraits, but look what I found in the illustration section on her site:
Whoa. Gorgeous! I did, however, know about the lovely perfume bottles that were also in that same illustration portfolio. They were actually the first bit of Marta’s work that I ever wrote about:
Ahhhh, I can almost smell their powdery, perfumy goodness.
Guess, what… more flowers! We were talking about them as part of her evolution from illustrator to fine artist {and it’s just a good excuse for me to show more of them}:
Yes, I love them. Now, I’ve said this many times before… I always admire artists who continue to push themselves to evolve. Marta is definitely one of those people! These are floral-ish, but heading into abstract… and they’re absolutely stunning:
These are the pieces I wrote about a few weeks ago… petals? Butterfly wings? Both? Love.

Oh, I just got chills… beautiful, and oh so very ghostly! This is the work of Toronto based artist Amanda Clyne. She refers to this series as “erased photographs”. Amanda works with oil paint as well, but these pastel ladies have been “painted” in an entirely different way.
“It begins with a photograph. The photograph is printed on a paper to which the ink will not adhere, creating a wet, inky surface that I can move around with a brush. Painting the photograph ultimately leads to the ink’s removal, leaving only a residue of the painterly process. The stained and scarred paper is then scanned, photographing the remaining trace of the original image’s painterly obliteration.”

Love. So much! I wrote about the collages of Istanbul based artist Merve Özaslan in early 2015, but I’m going to be totally honest… the second I saw those three girls in their red lip swimsuits, well, this post just started writing itself. After that, I lost track of all time and space as I jumped down a “Merve Özaslan – Bathing Beauty” rabbit hole… and here we are!
Portraits inspired by the old masters … but with just a touch of animal spirit guides around the edges! LOVE! This is the beautifully bizarre work {oil on linen} of New York / Philadelphia based artist Andrea Hornick. Rich backgrounds, elegant details, lovely ladies and, well, sharks. I love this description of the first piece in this post:

Not long ago, I was asked to contribute a must-see show in the US for this article. Um, that’s really hard! There are so many amazing shows all over the place… but, I decided to go with one that I would really love to experience. “Infinity Mirrored Room – The Souls of Millions of Light Years Away” by Japanese artist Yayoi Kusama at the Broad Museum in LA. It had just opened last time I was in LA but I wasn’t able to go! The cool thing about this installation, other than all of the mirrors and tiny little lights that seem to go on forever, is that you go in by yourself. Yep, no gallery crowds, just you for one magical minute. Note: tickets are FREE but you need to make a separate reservation to see this exhibit.

Well hello, pop culture explosion! First, let me begin by saying how much I love the hand-pulled screen prints of Australian-born, UK-based artist Heath Kane. Next I have to point out that these are two different series. Heath sent me a link to that hot pink, Queen Elizabeth filled series titled “Rich enough to be Batman” … maybe because my strange fascination with Liz is no secret. This collection “raises questions about wealth and social justice, through the idea that with enough money anyone can be a superhero.” Love! However, while I was on his site, I also came across another series, titled “Masks of Fear”. Clearly, I had to show them. Donald in a luchador mask is just too good to pass up.
Well that was hilarious and fun! I had Philadelphia based artist Martha Rich as my guest on the VERY FIRST Art For Your Ear, 71 episodes ago… annnnnd, she’s back! The book we worked on together was just released this past Tuesday, so what better way to celebrate than having Martha come on the podcast to talk about inner critics, pantyhose, and the possibility that armadillos are actually dinosaurs that still roam our planet. For reals. You can listen right up there, or you can subscribe on iTunes.

Martha was saying how crazy busy she is these days (YAY!), but that her crazy projects have been taking a backseat. You know, things like painting on rocks and leaving them around Philadelphia to be found by passers-by, and also working on a painting a day for a year type of projects:
How badly do I want the finger rock!? Sooooo badly.
And now, onto the book… “Your Inner Critic Is A Big Jerk”. We worked on this for almost two years, and had so much fun together… mind you, we both also had a few very meta moments when our inner critics told us there was no way we could pull this off. Luckily we ignored those jerks and got it done! Here’s a few pieces from the book {including the “speech bubble coming out of a butt”}, and some of Martha’s sketches:
LOVE! Those final two paintings are the pieces that got into this year’s American Illustration Magazine! Very big deal in the illustration world and so exciting for Martha {and me… living vicariously}. I wish I could be there this November to see them hanging on the wall at the big par-tay, but at least I got to be there last year. Here’s a few Instagram shots of me and Martha being very New York fancy/pink:

Weird and wonderful! And, that little guy is a perfect segue into one of the not-so-speedy speed round questions… favorite animal to draw? We all knew it was either going to be a lobster or an armadillo:
… what I didn’t expect was our crazy tangent about armadillos being dinosaurs. Oh my word, hilarious! Please don’t judge us!!! Oh no, prom photos are up next, so not judging us is totally out of the question now:
Hm, where’s Martha’s photo? Conveniently, she “couldn’t find it”, so now I’m forced to make a guess as to what she and “Mark” looked like at their Senior Prom. I bet this painting is pretty darn close!
And the final question in the not-so-speedy speed round… would she rather “wear pantyhose everyday for the rest of her life, or shave her head”. She voted for “shave her head”:
Bahaha! Pantyhose. She really does hate them so much.
