Sally Lundburg is a multi-disciplinary artist based on the Big Island of Hawaii. Her portfolio is full of interesting projects, but it was these hauntingly beautiful interventions in the woods, titled Space Invader, that grabbed me immediately. Here, in Sally’s words, is the description of this project:

“As I walk the land and plan these modifications/adaptations/hybridizations, intertwining own real and imaginary genealogy, I reflect on Hawaii’s history of ecological and social invasion and a cultural landscape that is still shifting today.”

Whoa. I never cease to be amazed by the work of Italian sculptor Willy Verginer. Wood. Carved into this. Amazing. I wrote about him in 2010, and thought that I couldn’t love anything more than that body of work {because it’s stunning}, but I just popped over to his site to see if he had done anything new, and boy, had he! Wooden blooms sprouting from smooth, dreamy full-size wooden figures… and oh my word, that navy & cream palette… perfection.

Oh, how lovely… the beautiful flowing garments of American artist Ron Isaacs … that are made entirely of WOOD!!! Yes. Wood. All of them… even that blue “silk” dress at the top. Cut, layered, painted wood.  Sigh. Insane.

Oh boy. Where to start? This is so romantic, and so artistic… and soooo romantic! Ok, on their first date, while out for a walk in West Virginia, Photographer Nick Olson and designer Lilah Horwitz sat and watched the sun set from a hilltop. Yes, that’s already romantic… but wait… it gets even better! While chatting on that hill, they thought it would be amazing to have a house made out of windows so that you wouldn’t have to watch the sun set through one small square…. so a year later, and a lot of time spent at garage sales and flea markets, they built a cabin of windows in the same spot where they had that very first date. Told ya… love, love, love – on so many levels!

Sigh… I would love to stumble across these mirror-covered chunks of wood while out for a stroll in countryside! London based installation artist Lee Borthwick uses “natural, organic and reclaimed materials, allowing the viewer to recapture the sense of reflection offered by dramatic landscapes.” Yes. Yes she does! Luckily, if you live in the UK, you don’t have to hope for a chance encounter with her work in the woods – she has recently been commissioned by Anthropologie EU to take her gorgeous wood/mirror/wire tapestries {each one is totally unique and hand-made by Lee} from the woods, to your wall:

Ok. This is taking affordable prints to an entirely new place…

Vintage paint-by-number. On circular, salvaged wood. For $22. Gah!!! These cool little nods to the past are the work of Canadian couple Patrick Lajoie and Mara Minuzzo. At their home studio, in the rolling hills of beautiful Caledon, Ontario {just outside of Toronto}, they manually transfer the pigments of an archival print onto wood… 1/2″ thick birch plywood scraps left over from the construction of their studio workshop. LOVE!

Do you remember this? A few years ago I wrote about this amazing abandoned farm house, turned life-sized dollhouse, on the Canadian Prairies. It was the work of artist Heather Benning:

So dreamy, right? Well, it’s almost like it was a dream, because just like that, it’s gone:

Sad face. But, it was the right thing to do. The building had become very unstable, and Heather didn’t want it to collapse, or be vandilized, so this past March she took matters into her own hands, and she set it on fire. Sad face, again. Although, if it had to go, it’s pretty cool that it went out in a blaze of glory!

Oh, pretty prairie dollhouse, I know it was your time, but I’ll still miss you. I will always remember you like this:

{Great article/interview with Heather Benning about this on CBC}

This is the work of American artist Lori Larusso. Prints? No. Paintings? Kinda. They are acrylic paintings, but I might be tempted to call them sculptures. See some of those shadows? Yep, these are actually paintings on intricately cut panels {all around the 4′ mark}. Gorgeous! And besides the beautifully mundane domestic subject matter {which I am obsessed with!}, in perfectly chosen colors, I think what I love most is that fact that they’re a bit of a mind trick… by cutting the panels, Lori gives so much dimension to these totally flat, partially dissected spaces. Ah-mazing.

This is the work of Boulder, Colorado based artist Chinn Wang … she screenprints on wood, and in the case of her “heraldry” series, they come in the form of a few crazy amazing family crest type things {and, of course, a couple of big blue bears to guard her own personal crest, titled “CW”} . Oh yes, and then there are these beauties:

Those owls! Pink Deer! Snap, Crackle AND Pop? Yep, it’s the whole gang! Love.

Sweet jiminy… I love, love, love these paintings. I mean sculptures. Or paintings. Ok, here’s where the confusion comes in… Melbourne based artist Sandra Eterovic paints with acrylic on wood, but then cuts away the background so that’s she’s just left with a giant Tshirt or a huge can of SPAM {so good! the painting that is, not actual SPAM} She lured me in with that number-covered couple, and then finished me off with these:

… grouchy men in Chanel shirts? Yes, yes, a thousand times yes!!!
