“clearly confused about her role as a woman”

Don’t you hate it when that happens? So confused. Yep, my co-host today is Brooklyn based artist Natalie Baxter. I have loved Natalie’s textile work for years, and I’m sure you’ve seen it because I’ve written about her a bunch of times, she’s in both of my books on women (here and here), and she was on the podcast a few years ago. Natalie has taken quilting to a whole new level by making soft guns, stuffed American flags, and bedazzled eagles among other things. We were planning to tackle the topic of art vs. craft, which we attempted, but that also lead us down some other pretty winding paths like women in art, and mothers as artists. Yeah, big topics. You can listen right up there under her “clearly confused” banner, or subscribe here.

Here’s a little look at a few of the things we talked about. First up, a couple of her “Bloated Flags” and two “ALT CAPS” banners:

Love! And there’s more… how about some bedazzled eagles from her “Squad” series, and a bunch of “Warm Guns”:

Ooh, look at that big guy! So. Good. These guns were the first quilted pieces Natalie ever started making and, clearly, there was no turning back after that!

And finally, a couple of girls who both look fabulous in leopard print:

Ahhhh, so beautiful! I’m so excited to see what’s next for Natalie, ie., as soon as she posts about her “Housecoats”, I will too! Thanks so much to Natalie for taking the time to do this with me; thank you Create Magazine for supporting this episode… don’t forget to submit your work to their International call for women artists > February 2nd is the deadline for submissions; and huge thanks to you for listening… there will be more ART FOR YOUR EAR next weekend.

“muses ‘n more”

Yep, Ashley Longshore is back and she’s ready to fire us up and get this decade started RIGHT!  You know the drill… here’s a peek at the stuff Ashley and I talked about. You can listen right up there under that very festive shot, or subscribe here.

First up, a few of Ashley’s usual muses… one of which could be YOU! What!? Yep:

Um… DO IT!  Email your authentic, colorful and enthusiastic selfies to hollywood@ashleylongshore.com and then cross your fingers. Tight.

Speaking of muses:

This is Ashley with one of her fashion heroes, Japanese designer Tomo Koizumi. His colorful, layered frills could not be more perfect for Ashley. The photo above was just a fun try-on session, but look what she took home for her own closet:

Bahahahaha! HELL YES! Oh, there’s so much to say. 1. The rainbow Tomo is perfection. 2. Yes, Tommy and Dee Hilfiger hosted a show for Ashley’s work during Art Miami at their home (!?) 3. I had to include those two photos of Ashley and her hilarious and talented friend, interior designer Andrew Alford (Note: I need to be friends with him.) 4. The “I’m just gonna do one last pee before the party” shot from Ashley’s Instagram feed during Art Miami. Pure f’n GOLD … just like her shoes.

Oh man, how do you go on after that? Easy, by showing a few pieces Ashley has recently acquired for her own collection:

Yes. All of of it. YES. There are links for all of these artists at the bottom of the post.

And finally, her amazing team. Not only does she work with them every day, sometimes she paints them too:

Ahhhhh! She was talking about Kate Grace … that’s her nursing her baby girl, Coco, dressed as – of course – a masked luchador. And I couldn’t NOT include a shot of Ashley and her Dad. If you see him pop up in her Instagram stories, WATCH.

At the very end of the episode, I asked her, WWALB {What Would Ashley Longshore Buy} – truffle fries or chocolate cake? I liked the very smart reason for her choice. Also, it gave me an excuse to show her sheet cake sculpture one more time:

Thanks to Ashley for being my first co-host of 2020, and thanks to you for listening! There will be more ART FOR  YOUR EAR next weekend.

Next, a look at my latest series. These are the first in what I hope becomes a looooong project filled with some really giant pieces… hm, I’m going to need a LOT more costume jewelry:

Ahhhh, I love them so much. And did you spot Liz in there? She made it in by way of a Canadian penny! FYI, the gold tape on the bottom is where the name plates will go {they’re currently at the engravers}.

And finally ~ drum roll please ~ THE GIVE-AWAY:

“storytime with esther pearl watson”

Yes, that’s THE Esther Pearl Watson – and her trusty sidekick, Gherkin – out in the middle of the California desert. Esther is a Los Angeles based artist and she also teachers at ArtCenter in Pasadena. I like to think of her as a modern day Grandma Moses… if Grandma Moses painted narrative scenes of a slightly dysfunctional childhood in rural Texas. I loved Esther’s “memory paintings” years before I ever met her… let’s face it, she had me at “pink UFO”. So, Esther once told me that she reads strange stories from art history to her students while they’re painting, so I asked her to bring those stories over here! Yes, it’s officially “Storytime with Esther Pearl Watson”… psst… there are a lot of stories that involve pee, so consider yourself warned! You can listen right up there under Esther and Gherky, or subscribe on iTunes.

First up, a few of Esther’s paintings, complete with titles that definitely tell a story:

I love everything Esther does, and how she does it – finding humor in some not funny situations. So vulnerable, and so empowering.

So, let’s have a look at Grandma Moses. She painted “the good old days”, unlike Esther’s “dysfunctional days”:

See, all she needs is a UFO in the sky, and BAM, she and Esther could be art twins.

Alright, onto Esther’s stories! First up, tyrian purple:

Liz gets it. Purple from head-to-toe in every scene as Cleopatra. Ah, soooo many snails, so much pee. If you haven’t listened to the episode yet, that should make you curious!

Next up, van Gogh’s vibrant, and kinda random, color choices … thanks to Julien, the paint salesman:

Ta-dah, the white roses that started out as pink roses! Oh Julien, make sure your products stand up over time, dude.

And of course, Paul Cezanne‘s “grotesque” bathers, butt cracks and all:

Apparently he didn’t work from models, but I wonder if he just needed some good glasses. Ah, we’ll never know.

And finally, I had to include this awesome photo of Esther WAY above the Los Angeles skyline. I assume she’s waiting for the mothership to beam her up:

And that’s that. Now, at the end of the episode, I said I wouldn’t be back until January, but I think I’ll pop in with a bonus mid-holiday episode between Christmas and New Year’s Eve… just in case your family is driving you crazy and you need a little escape to the studio! Thanks so much to Esther for digging up these amazing stories for us, thanks to THRIVE for supporting yet another episode, and huge thanks to you for listening! ~ Danielle

“ask martha”

Ahhh, one of my very first art crushes… Philadelphia based artist, illustrator and teacher Martha Rich! Today’s we’re diving into, “Ask Martha – it’s like Dear Abby but not at all like Dear Abby.” Basically I invented this segment because I looooove asking Martha questions. Her answers are usually hilarious, she’s super smart, AND she has a really inspiring attitude when it comes to life. You’ll see what I mean when I ask her the questions that you guys sent in. Yep, I asked my Instagram crowd to send in some questions, and you did! I picked 5 or 6 of them – some serious, some silly and then I followed the whole thing up with a bunch of really dumb trivia questions, because listening to Martha answer trivia is hilarious. You’re welcome. You can listen right up there under “log head” (aka the photo I took of Martha while our show was being installed in Joshua Tree a few weeks ago), or subscribe on iTunes. ps. My intro is all about creating your own visual vocabulary!

First up, a couple of quick snap shots from the opening of “Crush It”, a group show at Hey There Projects in Joshua Tree featuring Martha, Bruce Lee (far right), and me! ps. The show is up until December 13, 2019:

“Double doink”. Yeah, I’m not sure what’s happening here, but it made me laugh so I threw it in! That’s me and Martha with Aaron Smith (left) and Mark Todd (right), the founders of Hey There, both of whom are fabulous artists and teachers at ArtCenter in Pasadena. Hm, maybe the “double doink” is for all the name dropping I just did! Ok, moving on…

Here’s just a little taste of the work Martha’s being doing lately, and yes, I love it all:

Donna Did It. Hahahaha! Oooh, and all of that pink FURY up there is a perfect lead into this:

YES! Martha’s new book, “The Furious Notebook”, perfect for “releasing your rage” and “chilling the heck out”. I held this furious little beauty in my hands when we were together last week, and not only is it filled with Martha Rich fantastic-ness, it’s also very helpful in the current political climate. Blarg. Anyway, let’s not dwell on that. Here’s a peek at the mural Martha is finishing up on Monday at the airport in Philadelphia:

Um, hello “selfie-opportunity” while waiting for your flight! I like the blue guy and his yellow beard. I hope he finds his missing dipping sauce. ??? (This is why I love her).

Now, I’m sure you were interested in this part of our conversation. BlueQ and Martha have been working together for a few years now, turning her artwork into bags, coin purses, socks, oven mitts, and PASSIVE INCOME:

So. Good. ps. I buy that “Random Crap” bag for people all the time. Hilarious, because it’s true.

Next, this is the fabulous artist Martha named as one of her faves, and the woman she’d love to have paint her portrait. California based artist Georganne Deen:

Oh my word, love love love! Okay, well now I need to see what “Martha Rich by Georganne Deen” would look like.

And finally, because she brought up the pineapple glasses, I have a perfect excuse to pop this beauty into the post as the final image:

Luv ya, mean it. Seriously, I’m so glad my art crush from eleven years ago turned into a really wonderful friendship with an incredible woman. Thanks so much to Martha for answering all of my questions – even the dumb trivia about cow graffiti in Texas; Thanks to THRIVE for being such a fantastic partner; and of course, thank YOU for listening. There will not actually be a new art for your ear next weekend. Saturday November 30th marks the one year anniversary of losing my dad, and I’ve decided to give myself the weekend to just be still. I’ll be back the following weekend though with Esther Pearl Watson, and she’s bringing a whole bunch of weird ‘n wonderful stories from art history. See you then ~ Danielle

“too old, too young, too busy”

Yep, “I’m too old / too young / too busy”… that’s just one of the bits of bullshit we’ll be discussing during the very first installment of “Pennylane Calls Bullshit”. If you know artist consultant/magical guide Pennylane Shen, you’ll know she’s a smart, funny, straight shootin’ kind of gal. She’s here to call out some of the excuses, or lies, artists tend to tell themselves. Oh, and we’re also going to talk about TV because that’s just what we do when we’re together. You can listen right up there under Pennylane in the studio of Marlene Lowden {wearing a shirt by Art Girl Rising, while holding … wait… oh, would you look at that … it’s my book!} –  or subscribe on iTunes.

First, Pennylane looks at A LOT of art, and I love the pictures of her looking at that art:

Oh look, there’s Jamie Smith from Thrive too! See, they both love art so much that they jump around it in whenever they can.

Up next, a tiny peek at Pennylane in action. Enter Dazed & Confucius:

Okay, this is just in here to make sure you have her contact info in case you want to do a consultation with her! She has quite a waiting list, so get on it ASAP if you’re interested.

Aaah, yes… more art. Here are the three artists Penny mentioned she was loving these days:

Malaysian artist Sheena Liam, aka TimesNewRomance. You might recognize these images because they’re from a post I wrote about Sheena the second Pennylane sent me a link to her work. Gorgeous!

Next, Korean artist Lee Jin Ju:

Gah! Ridiculously good.

And finally, Canadian artist Marigold Santos:

See? Pennylane has amazing taste… in both art AND TV!

Haha! I couldn’t resist. Thank you so much to Pennylane for calling allllll of the bullshit – both the little pellets and the big steamers! Thanks to both Thrive {check out Mastermind} and Create Magazine {submit before Dec 2} for supporting this episode. Thank you to my Charlie for showing up and talking about Roy Lichtenstein’s artwork, “In The Car” … although we may retitle it “Leroy kidnaps Janet” … and of course, as always, thank you so much for listening. ~ Danielle

“creative myth busters”

Yes, yes, YES. There are so many creative myths that need busting, and I know just the man for the job! Andy Miller, aka Andy J. Pizza is my joy-filled creative expert for this 157th episode. And, spoiler alert, we’ve put together a brand new segment called: Creative Myth Busters with Danielle Krysa and Andy J. Pizza. We kicked off this first busting session with two big myths, but before we did that, I had a little catching up to do with this creative dynamo! You can listen right up there, or subscribe on iTunes.

First, I present to you the definition of JOY in photographic form:

Hahahahaha! Ahhhh, Andy hanging out on Sesame Street. Seriously, I would’ve cried if I was sitting that close to Big Bird’s nest. Look how happy Andy is… yep, this fills me with joy for sure!

Okay, more joy. Andy and Joseph Gordon Levitt {aka Joe. Yeah, that’s what I’ll call him too once we become super good friends … any day now}:

I love that Joe did this, and that Andy had the cojones to to reach out to him. Listen to the episode right here, and if you don’t know about JGL’s project, HITRECORD, check it out here! Oooh, and while I’m fan-girling, Joe also did a great TED Talk, titled “How craving attention makes you less creative”.

Next up, joy in the form of five foot markers and a mural for YOU to color in:

So frickin’ fun! The top most image is from the current mural at Color Factory, Houston – an ongoing collaboration between Andy and artist/designer Andrew Neyer {ps. I think the green one might be from a past “Color Me” mural they did.}

And finally, Andy’s brilliant, fun and always inspiring podcast, CREATIVE PEP TALK, just turned FIVE!

Wooohooooooo! High five on five years, Andy! [insert sound fx here] And with that, I will say thank you so much to Andy for taking time to bust some myths with me; thanks to Thrive {sign up for their Mastermind group!} for supporting yet another episode; and as always, thanks to you for listening. I’ll be back again next weekend with a new episode. ~ Danielle

“a little bit wonky”

Kate Bingaman-Burt is back on the podcast! Kate is a Portland based artist, illustrator, professor, entrepreneur, and now – thanks to a little fella named Hank – she’s also a mom. So, how does she do allllll of those things I just listed? That’s what we’re going to talk about in our segment titled “Kate Bingaman-Burt had a baby, and yes, she’s still an artist!”. I had a baby too, granted, that was thirteen years ago, but I still remember those early days like it was yesterday. I remember the fog, not showering for days, and feeling like I might not ever make art again. We’re talking rules, daily practice and that, YES, it’s absolutely possible to be a mother AND an artist. True story. You can listen right up there under Kate ‘n Hank, or subscribe on iTunes.

First up, what Kate’s daily “Obsessive Consumption” drawings used to feature:

Ahhhhh, I love it all. I also love that the items she’s buying / documenting NOW, are slightly different:

Haha! YES! Okay, she might not be keeping a traditional “Baby’s Firsts” book, but she’s definitely capturing everything in a super fabulous Kate Bingaman-Burt kind ‘o way! Also, that jean jacket is ridiculously cute. She posts these on Instagram now, so you can follow along over there.

Kate talked about how important having a daily drawing practice is to her, even if it’s only for 15 minutes a day. For years she has made time for this creative outlet… even one day after giving birth. Here are the hospital drawings she mentioned:

So, so special! What a way to capture Hank’s arrival into the world, and a wonderful way to keep a new mom calm (and feeling like herself in a time when it’s really easy to completely forget who you are. Yes, I’m speaking from experience!)

Next… ceramics!? Yep. Seriously, she is never not trying new stuff. Here’s what she’s been doing over in her mom’s kiln:

Oh, thank goodness… somewhere to keep my fingernails!

So, having a full teaching schedule, a daily art practice, and a baby aren’t quite enough for Kate. Enter her fantastic shop / Risograph print workshop studio, Outlet PDX:

Ooooh, I want to go to there. And look, it’s sweet little Hank giving Barbara a hug! Maybe that’ll keep her going just a little bit longer. Speaking of Barbara, she has a message about perfectionism for all of us:

Amen, Barbara, amen.

And finally, the project for this week. This was the unblocking project Kate gave me as part of her interview in my very first book, Creative Block:

Do it… and embrace every little imperfection. Barbara would want that. Thank you so much to Kate for taking time out of her very busy life to do this with me; thanks to both of this week’s fantastic sponsors – Thrive {sign up for their Mastermind group!} and Carve Out Time for Art {preorder their book!}; big mama love thanks to my very special guest at the end of the episode; and as always, huge thanks to you for listening. I’ll be back again next weekend with a new episode. ~ Danielle

“the universe is unfolding as it should”

Live from SMoCA! Ok, well it was live almost a year ago. Today’s episode has been in a holding pattern since last fall, when I recorded at the Scottsdale Museum of Contemporary Art – aka SMoCA – in November of 2018. I loved every second of my time there, especially floating in a pool on a flamingo (I’m Canadian, so I realllly like being in pools when it’s snowing at home). Once I got myself out of the pool, I had the great pleasure of talking to not only one, but two fabulous women: Jennifer McCabe, the Director and Chief Curator at SMoCA, and Saskia Jorda, a Venezuelan-born Arizona-based installation artist. You can listen to the full episode right up there under my pink friend, or subscribe on iTunes.

First, a little peek at this gorgeous gallery in lovely Scottsdale, Arizona:

Such a beautiful building filled with gorgeous art, not to mention a smart and talented Director & Curator. Jennifer is doing fabulous things at SMoCA – curating original shows, and also bringing in really interesting traveling shows. We talked about the two shows that were there during our record, and you can find links to both of them at the bottom of this post.

Next, Saskia’s installation work:

Gasp! Gorgeous! I’m sure her butterfly genitalia drawings were gorgeous too, but wow, I’m thrilled she found a path to her map-based installation work. I love her 2016 project, titled “Soft Borders”, which just happens to be featured in my latest book, A BIG IMPORTANT ARTIST – A Womanual.

That brings us to today. Literally. Here are a few images from Saskia’s Instagram feed showing her installing and preparing for the group exhibition, “Counter-Landscapes: Performative Actions from the 1970s – Now” (curated by Jennifer) that opens TODAY, October 26, 2019:

So exciting! … and, a few of the final pieces:

Oh my word! Those mixed media drawings are gorgeous, and I cannot deal with how much I love the piece above, titled “Zona Ambigua”. The rest of the installation shots won’t be ready for a few more days… that’s how hot of the presses this show is!  If you are anywhere near Scottsdale between now and January 19, 2020, go and check out this show.

Thank you so much to everyone at SMoCA for not only inviting me to do this, but also for being so patient. I’m sure they weren’t betting on this taking a year to go up, but I’m so glad this LIVE podcast is actually finally live! Thanks to Jennifer and Saskia for sharing their stories; huge thanks to THRIVE for supporting the episode; and as always, thank YOU for listening.

ps. And thanks, Mom, for reminding me that the universe really will unfold as it should. xo

“payne points with terrence payne”

“I got this” – yeah you do. A new Saturday, a new ART FOR YOUR EAR. If you didn’t hear the first couple of episodes in this new season, I’ve decided to change the format a little bit. Instead of interviewing artists about their personal journeys, I’ve recruited a group of creative experts to be my co-hosts. Today’s expert is the talented and hilarious, Minneapolis based artist and gallery owner Terrence Payne. He’s giving some really great advice on pricing and, even scarier sometimes, talking to strangers about your work! Tip No. 1: Don’t get drunk at your art opening. That, and more helpful advice (not to mention a story about an inappropriate Halloween costume from the 80’s) that you can listen to on the player right up there, or subscribe on iTunes.

Here are a bunch of the images we talked about during the episode… a few of Terrence’s latest text-based pieces:

LOVE! Now, even though these images are gorgeous, you really need to see them in context to truly appreciate their amazingness. In progress shots and reference for scale:

I mean, come on. So good. Also good… Terrence’s foray into the world of quilting:

I hope he really does try making capes … I want one!

And, of course, a peek into Terrence’s gallery, Rosalux:

Hm, October 30th deadline? You’ve still got time! Open Door is “open to all North American residents working in any 2D/3D media and video. Only works completed within the past two years are eligible for submission.” If that’s you, go for it!

And finally, THIS:

Oh my word. I cannot begin to express how happy this photograph makes me. Yes, those are the parents who let Terrence go trick or treating as a terrorist in the 1980’s (I blame this scene from ‘Back to the Future’.)  Ahhh, it was a “special” time. Anywho, thank you to Terrence for sharing so much fantastic advice… I can’t wait for the next installment of PAYNE POINTS with TERRENCE PAYNE; another big round of applause to thank THRIVE for supporting this episode of ART FOR YOUR EAR; and of course, thank you for listening ~ Danielle
