“Directed by Wes Anderson” … translation … a true work of art that will, in fact, make me insanely jealous and should be framed… if it weren’t a movie. Sigh. I love Wes Anderson films. Each one is an amazing story filled with hilariously strange characters, but for me, it’s the artistic attention to detail that pushes me over the edge! I love that every single one of his movies has a very specific color palette, and a perfectly chosen typeface that is present throughout the film. Don’t even get me started on The Royal Tenenbaums {I loved it so much I dressed as Margot Tenenbaum for Hallowe’en in 2002. True story.} Anderson’s latest project, titled Moonrise Kingdom, is going to be in a theatre near you this spring. Here, in an IMDb nutshell, is what it’s about:
“Set on an island off the coast of New England in the 1960s, as a young boy and girl fall in love they are moved to run away together. Various factions of the town mobilize to search for them and the town is turned upside down — which might not be such a bad thing.”
I would happily put any of these stills in fancy frames and hang them on my wall. Each one of them truly is a piece of art:
I. Can’t. Wait.
ps. As I said, one of my favorite things about any Wes Anderson film is the typography – and this time is no different. The script for Moonrise Kingdom is perfect. Thanks to a tweet from Tina Roth Eisenberg of @swissmiss, I found out that it was designed by Brooklyn based letterer/illustrator Jessica Hische. Lovely ♥
this guy is amazing, yesterday i saw ” The Squid and the Whale”, produced by him and was the only one that i had left to see (for what i know).
Thanks for the coming soon info, i’ll b waiting too =)
Oooohhh! This looks wonderful! I can’t wait. Just a little note: Her dress isn’t 1965, but more like 1970. Skirts didn’t get that short and become the norm with young girls until well after 1968. I should know because I can crack open my any of my high school yearbooks (1970-1973) and see many versions of this kind of dress.
Woops! The dress I’m referring to is the one on the girl with the binoculars.
Your words about Anderson’s work is just perfect. Those first Moonrise Kingdom frames remind me “Rushmore” a little. And yes, I can’t wait for it too!
always great….
i can’t wait!! eeeee!!
AHHH!!! I can’t wait.
it’s going to be soooo good!
I AM SUPER EXCITED. I too dressed up as Margot, but my brunet eyebrows were totally unconvincing. My husband dressed up as Richie, which was much more believable.
ha! my husband (boyfriend at the time) dressed as richie too! we’ve looked everywhere for a photo from the night, but i can’t find a single one! too bad – it was easily my favorite costume EVER!
amazing post, and a great way of looking at Wes Anderson’s work that I hadn’t considered before, thanks!
thanks gw!
Strange, I didn’t see Bill Murray or any of the Wilson brothers in any of those pics. Are you sure this is a Wes Anderson movie?
ha! well bill’s in it, but i couldn’t get a good screen grab of him!
yes! i am utterly infatuated with wes anderson! darjeeling limited is one of my all time favorites. and i took two nephews to see fantastic mr. fox and i was on the edge of my seat and/or nearly in tears most of the time at the completeness of that world, it’s own personal perfection. i wanted to live there forever. still do sometimes.
YES! loved both of those… especially fantastic mr. fox. i think i probably said ‘wes anderson is a creative genius’ about 15 times during that movie. cannot wait to see this one!

I saw a preview for this on tv the other day. I said to my roommate, “That looks like a “Wes Anderson” movie. Nowhere in the preview did it say “a Wes Anderson film”. I think it was a combination of the look, and the actors that were featured in the ad. I think he certainly has a distinct auteur/style. Not sure what it is. But my eye definitely recognized it.
I just love this movie.
