Collages? Well, not once he’s finished with them. This is the work of Japan born, New York based painter … yes, these are PAINTINGS… David Lyle. His portfolio is filled with funny, satirical work but these “art” pieces are easily my favorite, for obvious reasons. Here are David’s words about his work:
“My paintings are inspired by found photographs. I feel that to find a lost photo, and paint it allows the photo or “memory” to have a second life. I make a college from found photos and then I use the college as a reference to paint from and I use only black paint on a white gessoed panel. Most of my subject matter in the paintings are satirical commentaries of things going on in or around my life.”
So. Good.

Ok so I’m totally getting the “why didn’t I think of that?” Jealous Curator vibe – I mean not that I could ever paint like Mr. Lyle but I LOVE the tongue-in-cheek, vintage meta-ness! These are BRILLIANT! Thanks again Danielle for sharing another amazing artist with us. Love, love, love. My students are going to get a kick out of the old guy doing graffiti.
haha! so good, right!?
