I need alllllll of these. Now, these are not just gorgeous mixed media collages… see those black and white, Rococo-ish landscapes? Yeah. They’re graphite drawings! I totally thought they were found images, but they’re not! Mind. Blown. This is the absolutely lovely work of London based artist Sue Williams A’Court. Sigh. Here are Sue’s words about her work:

Classical landscape references are reinterpreted in a new context, rendered in graphite on a variety of surfaces. The form, composition and materiality are meticulously constructed to summon a state of mind rather than a specific location … The tension between the precision drawing and the loosely painted ground references different models of art history and alludes to contrasting types of mental attention competing for the same psychological space.

Beautiful.

These are ridiculously beautiful. I love the concept of of these images competing for mental space. We so live in a world where millions of images are competing for our mental space.

One of the reasons these are so effective is the contrast between the very finely drawn portions with the loosely constructed surroundings. contrast is so juicy– an excellent lesson for us as artists
