CONGRATULATIONS to Erika Rier… a copy of this lovely book is coming your way! {thanks to everyone that entered… and I hope that some of you made it to MoMA yesterday for the event on the lawn!}
I love this, probably because I love New York based artist/illustrator Maira Kalman so much, not to mention my love for vintage photographs of girls standing on lawns… oh, and would you look at that, that’s the name of the beautiful book that Maira Kalman and writer Daniel Handler {a.k.a. Lemony Snicket} created together! The first, very poetic, page reads:
One morning
we found some photographs.
One morning
these girls stood on lawns.
We looked at the pictures,
and we got to work.
There’s no use standing around.
You should do something.
This is the whole thing.
That really is the whole thing, isn’t it… LOVE! On Sunday, June 1 at MoMA {who actually published this little gem}, Maira Kalman and Daniel Handler will celebrate their new book, Girls Standing on Lawns, with a garden party featuring 1930s-style Parisian jazz from the Hot Club of Flatbush. From 3-5 p.m. in The Abby Aldrich Rockefeller Sculpture Garden. {Free with Museum admission}
ps. I have a copy of this book for myself, and… I have one toΒ give away! Leave a comment below and I’ll draw one name on Monday morning at 8am PST. Good luck!

Wow! I am in love!!! I would <3 <3 <3 a copy of this super cool book!!!!!!!!
If I could be any artist on the planet, I’d want to be Maira. I love how she makes books that dip into her soul and show a glimmer of the joyousness and curiosity that live there. I already own her “Principles of Uncertainty” and illustrated versions of “Elements of Style” and Michael Pollan’s “Food Rules”. She rocks!
Love love love these paintings! Such humor and fun… These are just gorgeous.
Yes yes yes! Must must have! Love staring at and disecting Maria Kalman’s work!
Ahhh hope to win this <3
This is just great. I want to see more!
Pure dreaminess. The images are nostalgic without being sentimental. I just moved to an old house on a dirt lot. This inspires me to grow a summer lawn, so I can be a girl standing on a lawn. π
Ouw yay ! Seems so funny and so muuuuch colors !
Kisses from France *
If you give me a copy of the book I will send you a picture of me standing on my lawn with it. Ha! π

I’ve been taking a lot of graduation portraits of my middle schoolers before our school closes for good, and looking at these images reminded me of how good and lovely it is to look back at ourselves, especially when we were in times of limbo. Thank you for sharing the beauty of Maira Kalman’s illustrations! If I get your extra copy, I’ll show it to my Art Club!
Too much lovely for words! Gonna go stand on the lawn with fingers crossed. xo

It is marvelous and admire it whole day! It is shame I live in Europe and can’t join all this joy in MOMA. So far the most possible to get is the book:P
Very interesting works! These picture could become a font of inspiration “to transform” some photos of my early-1900s images’ collection! π

I love Maira Kalman! And the book party sounds divine — wish I was in NYC!
These pictures are so purely happy, and yet slightly off-kilter so Kalman never stoops to sticky cuteness. Charming and intriguing at the same time.
Maira Kalman is a national treasure.

I MUST HAVE A COPY, so that I can stick the photos of my mother standing on the lawn, inside of the book!
Love love love. When I was 18 Daniel Handler called me to remind me to vote, part of a first-time voters campaign. Since then, I always feel I have a special connection to him, even though it’s a one-way connection. Thanks for sharing, can’t wait to look through this.
Love love! The illustrations are so fun, especially the girl doing a handstand!

Ever since cameras became available to record our daily lives and the milestones we celebrate, photographs like these represent us (as humans). The mundane is precious and beautiful, and Maira Kalman’s quirky illustrations really touch on that for me.

if the jealous curator
sends me a copy of
girls standing on lawns
i will read it to my 3 grandnieces
when they stand on my dandelion lawn
watching the tide fill the mud flats
hoping they remember that
all their lives as i remember
my Scottish grandmother
reading her worn child’s garden of verses
to my brothers & me
as we sat on a threadbare blanket
under her Nebraska lilacs
hoping for a sea breeze
Please please please fix the typo in line 6 of what’s above (flats not glats). Can’t seem to do it.

just love everything of it!
I just started a graphic design class in Budapest, Hungary, and the teacher showed us the work of Maira Kalman (first because her work is amazing and second her husband, Tibor Kalman was a famous graphic designer and illustrator of Hungarian origin, so it was essential to mention them in school). I immediately fall in love with her illustrations. It’s so lovely that you shared her work!
I have been collecting old photos like this in antique malls for some time to paint ! Imagine how I laughed when I saw this ! Perfect !!!
Quirky beautiful!
I wish I were in NYC right now so I could attend the lawn party. Gorgeous paintings!

Hi! I’d love to have a copy of this beautiful book:)
I love this concept of writer / artist collaboration. please enter me in the drawing for the book
I am so glad that I found your blog! What a joy it is to read all that you have posted. This book is a tribute to women in such a sweet way! We all have to stand somewhere π Thank you for the heartwarming post.
I have hundreds of such photos, and have stared for hours at housewives small and squinting from a wide empty yard, old women in their driveways & gardens, young women and girls stiff and silly, smiling, scowling, nervous, gleeful…
It’s amazing to have a artist I admire so much bring something I value into the public imagination.
oh so lovely!
This book would be the perfect addition to my growing collection. Wonderful inspiration! Thanks for sharing, as always.
