As I search around for art that makes me feel like I’ve been punched in the creative gut, themes begin to emerge. Lately, I have found a surprisingly large number of mask images. I love them… but I’m not sure why. Is it the mystery? The playfulness? My fond memories of the Lone Ranger? Whatever the reason, I started collecting images for this show during the summer with the intent of it ‘opening’ on Hallowe’en. Some are cute, and some are creepy… much like the trick or treaters that will be showing up at your door tonight. Have fun, be safe, and say hello to Zoro for me.

You should check out this new book “Monsieur cent tĂȘtes” by Ghislaine HerbĂ©ra (editions MeMo 2010, France). It won a prestigious prize at the Paris/Montreuil book fair last year. Through the process of trying on many historic masks, the main character travels a great emotional distance. This is a children’s picture book.
