So, you know how “affordable art” is a hot topic these days? Well, how does FREE sound?! American artist Vincent Serritella is a fantastic painter, but he also happens to be knee-deep in a project that he calls “free daily drawings“… in which, you guessed it, he does daily drawings for free, and here’s why:
“After reading the sales at art auction houses, it got me thinking: art should not only be available to the wealthy, but available for anyone. Hence, this year I’m creating 365 drawings and giving every one of them away.”
There are soooo many good ones to choose from, but you’ve got to be quick! These were the two that I was after… but alas, I was not even close to quick enough!

Vincent sent me a beautiful pencil sketch as part of this project, and it’s in my office. I see it almost every day and it give me no end of happiness. Such a cool thing to do! 🙂

That’s so cool! Reminds me of the Sketch Tuesdays they do here in San Francisco that has live art/sketch making by local artists in a gallery/bar, all for sale in the $5-$40 dollar range. It’s awesome because you can actually watch the artists work and buy your piece right from them. I got a great one from Annie Galvin of 3 Fish Studios last year. Still need to hang it, of course…

There recently was an exhibition in Berlin ”Anonymous Drawings”, based on a similar thought about the art market, but regarding it from the artists point of view. The conception was to show established and unknown artists side by side, without giving their names. So the drawings could only be judged by themselves and the artists anonymity could only be revealed by a sale. All drawings were sold for a symbolic unit sales-price.
Of course – not that generous, but a nice conception as well.

I was going to do the same, but free seems to be viewed as suspicious by the majority of the people I’ve encountered plus i have a few friends that give me lectures about it… I tend to hand out pieces from time to time. i’ll figure out a better way then just leaving it around in public for the taking to avoid the suspicious humans and the “that’s what you do for a living” pals.
it’s true… people might think you’re a bit crazy… but not me! : ) vincent also does large scale paintings that are NOT free, but this seems to be a nice combo for him. maybe you could do a combo too? a free one for every piece you sell? : )
