i’m jealous of janet echelman
Oh my word. American artist Janet Echelman makes huge, sculptural nets that are colorful and billowing during the day, and light up the skyline like beautifully bizarre jellyfish at night. Not that Amsterdam needs any help being beautiful, but yowza, that first piece in the top of the post creates an insanely stunning view of the city! Janet was originally a painter (USA), who studied calligraphy (China), and then dabbled in textiles (Bali), after which she was a teacher at Harvard (USA), and eventually ended up working in sculpture (India)… um, who’s inspired?! Yep, me too.
Yes! She has an installation at the San Francisco airport and it’s the best part about that moment after getting through security or right after landing and before I have to get on public transit. I always seem to be rushing past it but I think next time I’ll take some time to sit and appreciate it. Apparently, it’s much more complex than I ever noticed:

Let me get this straight….these are actual installments, not graphics superimposed on pictures??
Beautiful!
Sorry, I meant installations!
yep! that’s right! they’re quite something, aren’t they!?
This is amazing! I would love to see one of them with my own eyes…
And here is a talk she did at TED, very very inspiring : http://www.ted.com/talks/janet_echelman.html
Beautiful! I had to give a presentation on Janet Echelman while still in school! Her TED talk was a great aid in understanding the visual presence and significance of her installations.
Thanks for sharing! It is always good to be reminded of a great artist!

Stunning. You are right, they totally look like jellyfish.
Stunning…. they almost look like a flock of starlings dancing in the wind.
I wonder if birds ever get caught in them??!!!
