GASP! Ceramics? No. Cake frosting? No. Brace yourself, it’s OIL PAINT! Both of these stunning pieces are from a series titled “Under Heaven”, which could not be more accurate! I saw the heavenly work of Chinese artist Xu Zhen when I was at Art Basel Miami Beach last week. It took my breath away, obviously. I wanted to touch it (ok, and maybe taste it), but I controlled myself. Here’s an Instagram video I took, getting up close and personal with that circular piece…

oh. my. word. oil paint?! work by xu zhen “under heaven” #artbaselmiami #artbasel

That’s insane! In a good way! Those must take literally years to dry…and how expensive must those be to make!?

Xuzhen is a big name in Chinese contemporary art scene, for him the cost is a small issue of designing work

The colors he uses are appealing. I have not seen his other works, but these ones are inviting because they remind us of creams on delectable desserts. I wonder if darker shades would have the same appeal.

I have so many questions! How long does it take for the paint to dry? How much would it cost to use all this oil paint in this way? Does the artist use those frosting tips to create the shapes and textures? Truly amazing!!!!!!!!!!!

even acrylic paint would take long to dry in this format. oh well, i love it. looks so pretty like glass taffy and ice cream swirly things! beautiful colors! squishing paint into these 3d forms must be FUN FUN FUN!
