I’m so excited to be doing this “My childhood bedroom was…” post for blog for digs! I saw the post that Victoria at sfgirlbybay put together, and I jumped at the chance to participate. It’s a project that is raising awareness for dwell with dignity, a non-profit organization geared towards helping families escape poverty and homelessness through design. Now, I’m no interior designer, but I did have a bedroom full of rainbows and shag carpet that I absolutely loved, so I guess that kind of qualifies me:
I shared a room with my younger sister until I turned eleven. It was a magical day in the 1980’s when I left the Holly Hobbie wallpapered room to forge my pre-teen independence… in the basement! I filled my new space with the most important logos of the day {ESPRIT, United Colors of Benetton, Swatch}, and as many rainbow-themed items as possible. Luckily for me, one entire wall {wall, not floor!} of my new room was completely covered in a weird patchwork of insanely colorful shag carpet. I kid you not.
Now, eleven is a strange age for girls. You really, really want to be a teenager, but you’re still very much a little girl – hence this eclectic mix: a heart-shaped lamp, a very sassy hot-lips phone, and a shelf full of ceramic unicorns… and don’t even get me started on the many hours I spent listening to mixtapes about true, undying, can’t live without it love. Sigh. Oh, and speaking of which:
… yes, Johnny and Baby, like totally changed my life. Forever.
Ah, memory lane! There are several other bloggers sharing their rooms today too… here is the full blog for digs schedule, and to support dwell with dignity, please visit their site.
OMG Danielle–so fun! I too had the orange shag but I’m jealous of the holly hobbie before you graduated to ESPRIT. Sweet memories. Thank you for participating in Blog for Digs…your support means the world to us and to the needy families who will benefit. Happy new year and see you at ALT! xocc
thank you claudia, for not only organizing the initiative, but also for giving me a chance to think about my old room again – so fun! i may even watch a little “dirty dancing” this afternoon ; )
yep, see you at alt! can’t wait!!!
haha! so awesome. unicorns and dirty dancing. i hate that you’re so young! 😉 xo
ha! …maybe i was just a late bloomer! ; )
When I was 7 and my sister was 14 we had the final dance to Time of My Life DOWN. She even lifted me into the air at the end and everything! Ah, good times.
ha! i love it! have you seen this?

Oh my, had not seen that video, how great! Wish I had thought of it when hubby and i got married, then again, no way hubby could dance like that!
You are about 8 years younger than me, but I completely remember ALL that stuff. We had shag carpet in the whole upstairs of my house growing up, about 5 different colors including orange and lime and yellow. Really. What were they all thinking.
I had a hard time at first when orange came back into vogue. Such an aversion from a childhood surrounded by it!
Have a good weekend Danielle.
at our wedding my husband surprised me by memorizing the final speech (even though he never really saw the movie, but he knew how much i loved it), so when the last song of the night started, he had it interrupted about 30 seconds in… “sorry for the disruption folks, but i always do the last dance of the season…” and so on. and then of course, “time of my life” played! i was laughing so hard my stomach hurt. perfect end to a perfect evening!
happy weekend to you to teresa : )
Awwww, I love it! So great and romantic. I hope he has seen the movie now!
Yes, am looking forward to sleeping in tomorrow. 🙂

Thank you for linking my tapes! huzzah! I appreciate it!
