I am ridiculously excited about this new series of workshops! The idea came out of this post, and this post, and ultimately a joke that I made in this post about how fun it would be to have an artsy “girl crush tea party”. Well, after I made that joke, so many of you emailed me and said that you’d love to go to an artsy “girl crush tea party” … and voila, it’s happening! Here are all of the in’s and out’s of it. Let’s start with…
You will not believe who I have lined up as my co-hosts for the first well, it was going to be four, but now it’s EIGHT cities for 2012! Ready?!
So amazing, yes?! Here are the links to their very crush-worthy portfolios:
lisa congdon // samantha french // tif fussell // stephanie vovas // lisa golightly // jennifer davis // alyson fox // shauna alterio
March 10/12 : San Francisco with me + Lisa Congdon {recap}
April 14/12 : New York with me + Samantha French

May 26/12 : LA with me + Stephanie Vovas
June 9/12 {Sat.} : Portland with me + Lisa Golightly {recap}

Oct. 13t/12 {Sat.} : Philly with me + Shauna Alterio [recap]
Apr 20/13 {Sat.} : Austin with me + Alyson Fox [recap]
- ~ 14 people {including me and the artist} for an entire Saturday of creative fun!
- ~ 9am tea & coffee & pastries & chatting {kind of like a “pre-tea party” party!}
- ~ a talk by me re: women/art/insecurities/inspirations
- ~ a talk about insecurities/inspirations from the host artist {a working artist who also feels blocked sometimes – after all, it happens to the best of us!}
- ~ everyone introduces themselves/share their issues {artist blocks, too many ideas but not executing any!, etc}
- ~ break into groups and do 2 to 3 exercises to help with these issues {only require a fancy notebook & pencil, which will be provided.}
- ~ tea party lunch {catered by a local restaurant/bistro ~ sandwiches & salads, followed by lots of fancy little treats… and tea of course!}
- ~ an afternoon of making art {mixed media collage, so that you can do whatever you want. Supplies will be provided – inspiration coming from the morning exercises}
- ~ 6pm whoever wants to go out for dinner together can… but if everyone is pooped, we’ll just call it a day.
- ~ $175 {includes everything, except the dinner that might happen, if we just don’t want the tea party to end!
So that’s it! If you want to join me for inspiration, art, and pretty cakes you can sign up any time! {Thank you to the lovely folks at cargoh.com for providing a beautiful little online shop!}
this sounds amazing and just like what i need in my life RIGHT now! where in san francisco will the workshop take place?
YAY! So happy you’re all excited… can’t wait for the first one!
ps. Staci, Lisa’s studio is in the Mission : )
You had me at “too many ideas but not executing any!”
Yes! Yes! Yes!
Brilliant idea! I’m very interested in attending the NY workshop with Samantha French, and I will actually be in NY then! (visiting from Australia) – just wondering where in NY it will be held, or at least, which area?
penelope… the new york tea party will probably be in brooklyn. samantha is in the middle of getting a new studio, so i don’t have an exact address yet. but yes, you should come!!
Is this a female-exclusive event? I’m attempting to persuade a male friend to attend the one in Austin – he’s a skilled programmer AND illustrator, who focuses mostly on the programming side of his work. I think this might be a great way for him to meet other creative professionals and possibly might inspire him to both devote some time/attention to illustration and might introduce him to future collaborators for some of his games. (He’s a flash game programmer/creator by trade, and recently finished his first collaborative game with another flash illustrator.)
Thanks for the info, hope you’re having a wonderful day! 😀
No – of course guys can come… he may be the only one though ; )
I went to the cargoh site and tried to sign-up, but it was impossible to navigate. Is it me? 🙁
Oh – it should be easy. Choose the one you want (Lisa, Samantha etc), and then Add to Cart… let me know if it doesn’t work!
Just signed up, couldn’t be more excited! Have been posting older works on my blog recently, time for something new!
yay! can’t wait to meet you!
Oh my goodness. I so wish there was one close! If you ever want to do more of these maybe keep in mind Toledo, or Cincinnati, or I’d even drive to Chicago for something this awesome! Just saying! 🙂
noted! i’ll keep you posted : )
Sounds so fun! I live in Waco and I have been loving craft days with my friends in Austin. What a great way to make friends + network + hang out by the snack bar with other ladies.
absolutely! i think it’s going to be so fun… and hopefully everyone will come away inspired, ready to create, and with a bunch of new artsy friends in their city!
Any plan on adding Los Angeles to the mix?
Absolutely! Basically I’ll go anywhere that we can get a group of people together. I just set these 4 up to kick things off… I’ve actually had about 5 emails in the last day about LA, so let me reach out to a few artists and I’ll see what I can do ; )
i’m absolutely thrilled about this and was about to sign up when i saw the price tag. those are some expensive pastries! any plans to do something similar without the extreme cost? i could bring luna bars or something… 🙂
hey jen!
well, here’s the thing… i’m not making any money from this. i’ve played around with the budget for ages, and this basically covers:
the money I want to give to the artist for hosting us all day at their studio, a catered lunch (and breakfast pastries), art supplies for the afternoon (for 3 of the 4 parties), and to pay for a little bit of my travel costs. so, it really is all going somewhere! i wish i could make it less but then i’m not sure i could make it work the way i want it to! i wish i could do it for less, but i don’t think i can! i hope you understand : )
I was also really excited about this until I saw the cost, which I just can’t afford. I’m much more interested in the people and topics than the fancy food, and would happily pay $150 and sub in pizza and beer. 🙂
hey lauren – well i’m glad you like the idea at least! i’m going to try it out the way it is now (again, not priced for me to make money, but for me to make it happen the way i’m envisioning). for now i just want to break even. if after this first round i can figure out ways to lower costs a bit, of course i will.
Awesome! I hope to attend a future session. I’ll just enjoy your excellent blog in the meantime. 🙂
Thanks Lauren : )
[…] You will not believe who I have lined up as my co-hosts for the first four cities! Ready?! So amazing, yes?! The Jealous Curator […]
hi lauren – just back from Alt and i’m so inspired and excited! loved learning more about lisa’s work. can’t wait for this!
YAY! it’s going to be fantastic!!! (just booking a decadent bakery as we speak!)
Oh! Would so love to attend this but just don’t have those kind of funds at the moment~
Would be happy to host one in Oakland if you ever need a space 🙂
GREAT IDEA!
i so love this idea.. any plans to expand to the denver, colorado area? and if not i’m new to denver and would love to connect with local bloggers.. know of any good ones? i’m still trying to suss some out.. thanks! xo, tiffany
ooh, as soon as i saw ‘denver’ i knew exactly which artist i’d ask to host! let me see what i can do ; )
as far as bloggers in denver… i’m not sure, but i’ll keep an ear out for you.
oh wonderful! i look forward to the possibility… (;
thanks for the quick response, xo, tiffany
Wow! Awesome idea and wonderful guest hosts. I think your first four parties will be fantastic. I hope you’ll add Minneapolis/St. Paul to your list of possible cities. We have some great artists here – and good food, too!
sounds good to me! i’ve got a list of other cities (where people have shown interest) so i’ll add minneapolis/st.paul to my list! : )
Would love to sign up for the San Francisco one 🙂 Am I too late?
hey lexie,
sadly, yes. it sold out last friday. lisa and i are thinking that we might do a second one in the summer though, because there were quite a few people that wanted to come! i’ll let you know if we add that to the schedule : )

And Melbourne, Australia, too please… Guess the tickets would need to be a we bit more expensive 🙂 You could host some Aussie bloggers though…
ha – yep, just a little more expensive! i spent some time in sydney, and wanted desperately to make it to melbourne… maybe this will be my reason to finally get there! 😉
Yes, come! You’ll love Melbourne. There are some ace girl design/art bloggers here too. You’ve probably heard of some/all of them, but, just in case: Beci Orpin, Neryl, Sandra Eterovic, The Design Files, Frankie & Swiss… I could go on and on…
ooh, those are some very crush worthy girls! i also love laura mckellar (i think she’s in melbourne?)
She is indeed! Oh, I forgot Kat Macleod… I’ll shut up now…
Wonderful! I’ll be keeping my eyes on a possible Toronto session in the future! Thanks!

How about Providence, RI? I would totally come! I heart tea parties.

I want to sign up for the Austin experience – can you tell me where will this be held? I’m really excited about this whole idea.
hi martha anne… it’s going to be at alyson fox’s beautiful house, just outside of austin (about 35mi out). her beautiful house is almost finished being built (which is why we moved it from september to april… you know how contractors can be!). anyway, it’s going to be a GORGEOUS day! hope you can make it : )
we still have to decide on an exact date in april, but we should now fairly soon!
http://www.cargoh.com/product/girl-crush-austin-alyson-fox
Can you tell me the general direction – north austin? south? I teach high school art and I’m trying to coordinate several things at one time in April – I will definitely keep my eye on the date you pick so I’ve bookmarked this page. It sounds wonderful and very fun.
i’m not sure of the direction, but i’ll ask alyson and get back to you! : )
Oh my! This sounds A-MAZ-ING! I just moved from Philly area to San Francisco area. I wish I had know about this before! I see you just had a San Francisco tea party in March. Here’s hoping you have another one sometime in the near future. Would love to join in on the fun and inspiration. Thanks for creating this!
I stumbled on your site looking for a random google search for a female artist. I am so happy i did. your site is great. Thank you for lifting up the women of the art world. big smiley face to you. 😀
Rachael Rendon
oh, thank you so much rachel! so glad you found me 🙂
These workshops sound like so much fun! I am sad that the philly one is sold out. Please consider running another session.
Keep up the great work!
Erika
What what? I just found this. AND I love Alyson Fox’s work. AND I live in Austin, AND I’m turning 40 in April. AND this might just have to be a little b-day gift to myself from myself! 😉
YES!!! there are a few spots left, and clearly one is meant for you! i’ll even bring a candle for one of the tea party treats! ; )
Come to Denver!!!
i would love to!
Came across your site via TinkerLabs. Love it. I’m a “retired” graphic designer with 2 little squirts in toe….have been thinking of ways to come out of retirement once the kids start school. Have been thinking of getting back to my roots – fine arts – but blocked is another word for rusty. Have you considered doing more next year? Maybe coming to Canada, Calgary to be more exact?
🙂
hm… calgary hasn’t come up yet, but i can put it on the list! i’ll probably do vancouver next year. stay tuned, and good luck with your “new chapter”!!! : )
your blog is great!!! I love it!!! congrats from Argentina.

I just found your site today and realized that I missed the New York event. I’m just saying that it is a really big town, truly worthy of more than one event…
Please notify me of the next shindig. They sound amazing!
[…] GIRL CRUSH is an art workshop & tea party I started in the Spring of 2012! They’re a series of one-day art workshops held at the studios of amazing women. We talk insecurities, artist blocks, and inspiration. We eat fancy sandwiches, and pretty cakes. And then we make art. I’ve been to four cities already (San Francisco, Seattle, Portland, Minneapolis), and I’m headed to Philly on October 13. They have all been amazing, inspiring, and delicious experiences! […]
Wishing I could be one of the artists coming to philly. Are you thinking of planning anything else for 2013?
hi jenn : )
i’m doing chattanooga in february, and austin in april… there’s talk of chicago, boston, and maybe vancouver and toronto… we’ll see if we can get sponsors etc.
Will you be back in Seattle to do this again? I’m so sad that I missed it! Looks wonderful!
please please do one in Brooklyn!
As a curator and artist (who currently has Julie Buffalo Head’s work in our gallery) living in Minneapolis….I am so bummed I didn’t hear about this until today! Just stumbled upon your website. It looks like an awesome series of event though! I hope I can catch one some day. All the best on your endeavors! Inspiration to you….
i just found out about this and i am very sad that I missed Jennifer Davis. I hope you organize this next year and I hope that I am able to take part!
PS – PLEASE PLEASE do one in VA!
This is an amazing idea! Any desire to cross the border up into Toronto? I guarantee there would be lots of ladies into it.
Plus there is a big Frida Kahlo exhibit starting on Oct. 20th at the Art Gallery of Ontario.
This looks amazing!Any plans for Vancouver?
maybe… i’m thinking i might do one in 2013… stay tuned! ; )
[…] Girl Crush Tea Party by The Jealous CuratorFirst off, there’s probably nothing more enticing for me than the combo of getting together with like minded creative women to drink tea, eat sweets and make art. That’s just about as good as it gets. So, I hope to go to a Girl Crush Tea Party and secretly really want to host one ’cause I love that kind of thing. Also, I see this particular group of women as a tribe I’d like to be part of. I can relate to their sensibility and style. […]
This is wonderful. I’m so happy to have stumbled upon this. I think this fills a very important space and women and artist need! Any plans to do another one in San Francisco?? Even if I never get to go it makes me feel all warm and fuzzy that it happened at all 🙂
Are you going to be coming back to San Francisco anytime soon? Any cool workshops or events that you know of in SF? I just moved here am looking for ways to explore my crafty side and to meet some great new friends.
I LOVE this idea. I love art, and I love women sharing and helping and building each other! I am an art teacher, and I am just in love with this. Wow. I just wish there was an event closer to me. I am in Phoenix- I’d love to help you plan one here if there is any interest.
Love this idea and maybe Salt Lake next time?
Can I add to the chorus of Baltimore? We have a wealth of fantastic artists here – it’s Charm City after all!
i’ll put it on my list : )

Wonderful idea! Would there be any interest in offering the workshops in Italy? We’ve been running arts and creative workshops in various locations in Italy since 1995. You bring the workshop and attendees, we do everything else! Email nancy@ilchiostro.com
hi nancy! i have been asked to come to europe quite a bit lately! trying to figure out if i can get an airline sponsor. if i could get over there, i could do a 3 week tour and hit a bunch of cities, without having to increase the cost for attendees. if you have any thoughts about that, let me know! : )
Any new Girl Crushes scheduled for 2013? Definitely up for a mini vacay, but Southern California is always a good time!!! Looking forward to tea time with you creative ladies 😉

These sound so lovely I wish I knew about them last week! I hope it comes back to NYC!
I can’t believe I hadn’t heard of this till now! Please host another one in Texas (or Houston *wink wink*) soon!
Definitely come to Atlanta! I know ladies that could help host and attend!
I’m with Lisa, I can’t believe that I found out about this right after the last event, that just happened to be in Texas! Unlike Lisa, I vote for an event in Dallas, or McKinney, where I am, would be even better! Actually McKinney does have a lot of very active artists. Anyway, I would love to help if there is an event in north Texas.
oh boy! pressure from texas! i’m just trying to decide the fate of GIRL CRUSH, but i’ll make sure texas (somewhere!) is on the list : )
Hope you can make it to Atlanta at some point! We’d love to have you!
oh thank you! i’d love to see atlanta : )
These sound and look like great fun and totally inspiring. Please tell me there will be more Girl Crush tea parties. If there is another San Francisco one I will be there. I have always loved the art you have shown on SFgirl by the Bay and ran into a lot of art work posted on pinterest that took me back to your blog. I don’t know why it took me so long to make it over to the Jealous curator, but now I hooked. Thanks
oh thanks amber! i’ll be in sf early next year and was thinking i might do one there then… i’ll keep you posted! : )
Milwaukee please. Or Chicago. Soon!

Hello!! Just curious if there will be any more GIRLCRUSH events in the future?? 🙂
You’re just about right but what about the last one you posted not long ago that was slightly different? I believe you were right the first time.
I was not able to attend the Austin crush…now I live in California near SF. Will you be doing any more of these events? I’d like to give it another try!
Thanks,
Martha Anne
I love this…awesome thanks for this. 🙂
