Layers and layers and layers of goodness. This is the collage, and or drawing, and or paper-cutting, and or printmaking work of California based artist Elise Wehle. I came across her work for the first time a few weeks ago when I was judging the UncommonGoods art contest… one look at her portfolio and we knew we had a winner! You can see why, right?! She’ll be selling prints through UncommonGoods, but boy or boy, I sure would like to see an original up-close n’ personal! Beautiful. Speaking of beautiful, read her artist statement… it’s perfect:
“I make the art I do to pull me away from the increasingly digital world that surrounds me. Every day I spend so much time in front of a glowing screen that sometimes I forget I possess five bodily senses and not just one or two. Making art makes me conscious of my hands again, and all of my work requires time-intensive, redundant movements that remind me that not everything is as instantaneous as a click of a mouse. By weaving together paper, cutting lines, and folding shapes, I manipulate drawings, photos, and prints to create new landscapes for me to explore.”
This is amazing! I do feel jealous now, since I have been working with similar paper-cutting …but these are fantastic. Thank you for sharing
so are yours! i love “the keeper”! (don’t worry, everything’s been done in every color! just keep going down your path… your work is lovely!)
I agree, perfect artist statement (something I SO struggle with). And wow…these are just dreamy.
And Melanie just checked out your work and it IS really beautiful!

wow these are so beautiful, love the techniques she uses and the dream like quality. Just gorgeous.
These are gorgeous. I loved them so much I went to her website to check out the prints, and they’re so affordable! Just made my first purchase based on a JC recommendation– excited to see these in person in 2-7 business days.
yay!!! which one did you get?!
The bottom one “Cloudy Mountainscape.”
nice!
Just made my first JC purchase!
love!!! that makes me very happy : ) did you get the cloudy mountainscape too?
Keep meaning to come back to thank you. I purchased the Forest Intaglio collage from Elise. It’s gorgeous. I’m trying to figure out how to frame it so the beautiful weaving on the reverse side is visible. Thanks for pointing me to Elise!
oh how exciting! maybe you can have it mounted between two pieces of glass and then hang it from the ceiling (eye hooks in the top of the frame)? YAY! that’s a gorgeous piece : )
Excellent idea. If not from the ceiling, at least from brackets, away from the wall. I was thinking to ask my framer to do a mat on either side of the piece and sandwich that between two pieces of glass. I don’t want to smush it too flat between the glass panes as I want to preserve the dimension of the weaving. I’ll let you know how it goes. Could be a challenging bit of communication as he doesn’t speak much English! I will bring my trusty Chinese interpreter!
ha! well good luck – sounds like it will be pretty amazing when it’s all said and done! ; )
